What to Expect

Our expert instructor will guide you through the step-by-step process of cutting, assembling, and finishing a beautiful cedar bat box. Gain insights into the importance of bats in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and understand how your handmade creation can contribute to their conservation. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced woodworker, this class offers a rewarding experience in both skill development and environmental stewardship. And you'll be helping to support Nature's Nursery, which provides medical care to injured, orphaned or ailing wild animals, and conduct conservation educational outreach programs for children and adults.

The best time to install bat boxes in the Midwest is during the late winter or early spring. Installing bat boxes during this time allows them to be in place before the bats become active in the warmer months. Bats typically emerge from hibernation in spring and start looking for suitable roosting sites.

Ideally, you want to have bat boxes installed before the bats begin their active season, which is typically from April to September. This ensures that the boxes are available when bats are actively seeking shelter for roosting and raising their young.

It's important to note that bat boxes should be placed in locations that receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day and are mounted at least 12-15 feet above the ground. Additionally, avoiding areas with excessive artificial light and providing a clear flight path to the entrance of the bat box will enhance their attractiveness to bats.
